Free A-level revision apps and websites
Dr Lavan Ganeshkumar, PhD · updated 4 October 2026
You can revise for A-levels well without paying anything. The free tools below cover understanding, memorising and exam questions, and the best of them are as good as paid ones for their one job. What free does not do is decide each day what you should study, which is where most students slip.
Check each tool for your exam board, because content and question style differ between boards.
Free tools by job
Pick one tool per job rather than trying everything.
- Exam questions and past papers: Physics & Maths Tutor (PMT) has topic questions and past papers by exam board, across maths and the sciences.
- Learning a topic: Seneca has free A-level courses with questions and progress tracking, and BBC Bitesize gives plain explanations of concepts.
- Memorising: Anki is a free spaced-repetition flashcard system on most platforms, and you build or download the decks yourself.
- Hard problems: Isaac Physics is free and good for building problem-solving in physics, and Maths Genie has free maths worked solutions and topic questions.
A complete free setup
Use one free tool to learn, Anki to remember, and PMT for questions, and mark everything against the official mark scheme. It costs nothing and works if you plan it yourself and keep to it.
Where free stops being enough
The usual failure is not the tools but the daily decision: what do I do today, and have I revisited last month? A free setup leaves that to you. Paid options exist mostly to take that decision away, with a plan, a teacher or marking.
Free tools also rarely mark your written answers. Free past papers need you to mark yourself, and students tend to mark too generously.
Where Trayna fits, and where it does not
Trayna is a 24/7 online tutor in your pocket, on your tablet and on the web. Dr Lavan teaches you the topics in the app any time, anywhere, and an adaptive plan reinforces them each day from now to your exam. It is there for students who cannot afford 1-to-1 tutoring, and it is built to act like a 1-to-1 tutor: it teaches, it checks, and it adapts to how you are doing. The aim is that you really understand the subject and are prepared for it, not just that you have revised it. It is A-level only, for Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Maths follows Edexcel; Chemistry, Physics and Biology follow AQA.
It is a paid product (14 days free, then from 9.99 pounds a month.) for students who want to be taught and led through a plan.
It is for both Year 12 and Year 13. Year 13 students already use it, and Year 13 topics are being added as current students need them while Year 12 is the most complete, so check your topics in the app. If you only want free past papers, PMT does that better than we do, and we would rather you used it.
Common questions
What are the best free A-level revision apps?
Physics & Maths Tutor for questions and past papers, Seneca for free courses, Anki for flashcards, BBC Bitesize for plain explanations, Isaac Physics for physics problems and Maths Genie for maths solutions.
Is there a free alternative to Save My Exams?
Partly. Physics & Maths Tutor offers free topic questions and past papers, and Seneca offers free courses, though neither has the same single library of notes, questions and flashcards by exam board.
Where can I get free A-level past papers?
Physics & Maths Tutor collects past papers and mark schemes by board and subject, and exam boards publish papers on their own sites. Always mark against the official scheme.
Are free flashcards enough for A-level?
Flashcards help with recall, but they do not teach a topic or train exam answers. Use them alongside questions marked against the scheme.
Does Trayna have a free version?
It has a 14-day free trial, then costs from 9.99 pounds a month. For entirely free revision, the tools above are good.
Trayna does this automatically. You enter your subjects, your exam dates and how long you have each day, and it builds the route from today to those exams, then adapts it as you go. Maths follows Edexcel; Chemistry, Physics and Biology follow AQA.
