A-level revision apps compared: what each one is for

Dr Lavan Ganeshkumar, PhD · updated 4 October 2026

The best A-level revision app is the one that does the job you are stuck on. The main options split into those that explain, those that help you remember, and those that give you exam questions. Most students need one of each, not ten apps.

This comparison is written by Trayna, so treat our own entry with the same scepticism as any vendor page. We have tried to say what each tool is genuinely best at, including where ours is not the right choice.

Quick comparison

What each tool is mainly for:

  • Save My Exams: revision notes, topic questions, past papers and flashcards by exam board. Best as a main resource when you are not sure what to revise.
  • Physics & Maths Tutor (PMT): free topic questions and past papers. Best for exam practice at no cost.
  • Seneca: free A-level courses with questions and progress tracking. Best for working through a specification at no cost.
  • SnapRevise: summaries, flashcards, video lessons, an AI tutor and practice papers. A broad paid platform.
  • StudySmarter: flashcards, quizzes, AI explanations and a study planner, with your own notes uploaded. Best for turning your own notes into recall.
  • Anki and Brainscape: spaced-repetition flashcards. Best for memorising, and you build the cards yourself.
  • Quizlet: quick flashcards and tests. Best for short bursts and definitions.
  • Cognito and ClearConcept: short topic videos with quizzes, and interactive tools for some chemistry topics.
  • Trayna: a 24/7 online tutor in your pocket, on your tablet and on the web. Dr Lavan Ganeshkumar teaches each topic himself, and an adaptive plan sets what you do each day to your exam date, with spaced recall and marked questions. Aimed at really understanding STEM, not just revising it.

If you want a free setup

Use Seneca to learn, Anki to remember and Physics & Maths Tutor for exam questions, and mark everything against the official mark scheme. It costs nothing and it works if you have the discipline to plan it yourself.

What a plan-led app adds, and costs

The usual reason a good free setup fails is not the tools, it is that nobody decides each morning what to do. A plan-led app removes that decision: it builds the route from today to your exam date and adapts it when you miss days or get questions wrong.

That is part of what Trayna is for: it is built to be a 24/7 online tutor in your pocket for students who cannot afford 1-to-1 tutoring, with Dr Lavan teaching and an adaptive plan around you. It is a paid product: 14 days free, then from 9.99 pounds a month. It teaches from the start of each topic, so it suits students who want to be led rather than to assemble their own resources.

What Trayna does not do

Trayna covers A-level Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology only, with no GCSE, and no other A-level subjects. It is for both Year 12 and Year 13; Year 13 students already use it, and Year 13 topics are being added as current students need them while Year 12 is the most complete, so check your topics in the app before paying. It is not a free past-paper library; for that, use PMT.

Maths follows Edexcel; Chemistry, Physics and Biology follow AQA.

How to choose

Decide which job you are stuck on, then pick one tool for it.

  • You do not understand the topic: Seneca, Cognito, SnapRevise or Trayna.
  • You understand it but forget it: Anki, Brainscape or StudySmarter.
  • You know it but lose marks in exams: PMT or Save My Exams past papers, marked against the scheme.
  • You are not sure what to do each day: a plan, either your own timetable or Trayna.

Common questions

What is the best A-level revision app?

There is no single best one. Save My Exams is the most common main resource, Physics & Maths Tutor is the best free source of exam questions, Seneca is the best free course, Anki is the best for memorising, and Trayna is built for students who want a daily plan to the exam with video tutorials, recall and marked questions in one place.

Which A-level revision apps are free?

Physics & Maths Tutor, Seneca, BBC Bitesize and Anki on most platforms are free. Save My Exams, SnapRevise, StudySmarter and Trayna have paid tiers; Trayna offers a 14-day free trial.

Is Trayna better than Save My Exams?

They do different things. Save My Exams is a library of notes and questions you choose from. Trayna decides what you do each day and teaches it in video, which suits students who want to be led. Many students could reasonably use both.

What is Trayna?

Trayna, pronounced "trainer", is a tutor in your pocket for A-level Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Dr Lavan Ganeshkumar, founder of Ganes Academy, teaches each topic himself, and an adaptive plan builds your days from now to your exam, aiming to make you really understand the subject and be prepared for it.

Trayna does this automatically. You enter your subjects, your exam dates and how long you have each day, and it builds the route from today to those exams, then adapts it as you go. Maths follows Edexcel; Chemistry, Physics and Biology follow AQA.
